About Orchard House

Orchard House
::Orchard House is located at 2807 Orchard Ave, just north of the USC University Park Campus.  It is a residence for up to seven students, and the occasional faculty member, staff member, or visiting scholar.  Orchard House aims to be an “intentional community” of people from differing backgrounds of both sexes who are interested in one another, are willing to share their traditions with one another, set goals for the house together, and learn to care about one another.  There are six bedrooms upstairs; four singles, two doubles. The house has a large kitchen, dining room, laundry room, living room, and front and backyards to be shared by all the residents.

In recent years, a variety of activities have been shared by residents of Orchard House, including walking tours of downtown LA and the neighborhood, a van tour of Los Angeles, presentations and discussions on neighborhood issues, and movies and videos on Los Angeles topics.  Since 2003, residents have made commitments to serving the local community by volunteering a minimum of twenty hours per semester to A Community Place (ACP), a small social service agency located at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church just west of the USC University Park Campus, about six blocks from Orchard House.  ACP, which is open a few hours a week, provides sack lunches, bus tokens, and taxi vouchers, along with appropriate referrals to other agencies to seniors, the working poor, some middle and high school students, and some homeless people.

Orchard House residents have served ACP in various ways including the following:  helping on-site at ACP to talk with and serve some needs of neighborhood residents; packing sack lunches for ACP clients; managing a small parking lot on football Saturdays (a fund raiser to support the ACP program); helping with Web site development; and recruiting and supervising other ACP volunteers.

One Orchard House resident, who serves as on-site manager, is responsible for paying bills, collecting rent, calling repairpersons, helping to create the “Orchard Community,” and other duties.  Orchard House and A Community Place are projects of United Ministry at USC, which is located at URC 103 on campus.  Phone:  213-740-2667.  Applications for residency are accepted during the spring semester of each year for the following academic year.

This is where Orchard House is on the Map.
