SOME RULES AND TRICKS PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW This “guest editorial” for Freshman Focus was written by a student who was then a sophomore student at Webster College. United Ministry thinks these remarks are of great value – and passes them along with permission to any and all coping with roommates, apartments, and other realities of campus life. . The “Guest Editor” indicates they are things she learned first hand and from roommates. Intended primarily for freshmen and transfer students . 1. Comet surface cleaner is a gift from God. God left us the Holy Spirit to comfort us, and Comet to clean our bathrooms. I used it yesterday for the first time and about passed out. Our bathtub was clean. 2. If you have a basically all-mohair sweater, and it says “dry clean” on it, go ahead and dry clean it unless you want it to fit a six year old with ape arms. 3. If you accidentally wash your wallet in your laundry, lay it out to dry. Don't try to microwave it because the leather will try to cook. 4. If you are cooking and have hot grease to strain, don't use a plastic strainer. The hot grease will actually melt the plastic forming either a) a now useless strainer, or b) a stringy-plasticy piece of art. 5. Just because the cheese says it expires in July, if you opened it in September or October, it really isn't good. 6. Just because you have cable doesn't mean you need to stay up till 3:30 to see the real meaning behind the song Rio by Duran Duran. 7. Even though it's in the freezer, it's probably a good idea to remove the snow covered frozen vegetables left by one of last year’s roommates. 8. Don't forget about the lint trap on the dryer. It's not a mouse - you just forgot to remove the lint for the past 20 loads. 9. Don't forget to clean the stove grill “thingys” when something boils over. Then the next time you cook, you won't think your house will burn down from the massive amount of smoke being produced from your one little front burner. (that is the word, “burner”). 10. There comes a time when you have to ask yourself, quantity or quality. In college, there is no hesitation, 10 packages of Ramen soup for a dollar --- quality all the way baby.!
