Lover's Grief Over the Yellow River
(Huanghe Juelian, 1999)

Synopsis

The film tells the story of a grounded American pilot during the Second World War who learns about the noble spirit of the Chinese poeple when he is rescued by the communist-led Chinese army after an emergency landing near the Great Wall. On the way of being escorted to the Communist base, the pilot falls in love with a girl soldier whose lingering memory of being raped by the Japanese makes her a determined fighter. In the final sequence, she sacrifices her own life by lifting the American pilot to the safe ground. Half a century later, the American pilot returns to the Yellow River to grieve for the native people who rescured him.

Starring the emerging Chinese star Ning Jing and her American husband Paul Kersey, Lover's Grief was China's official selection of the 2000 Academy Awards in foreign film category.
