Synopsis

Starring Gong Li, this film focuses on an ordinary Chinese working woman, Sun Liying, who chooses to sacrifice her career to help her young deaf son pursue a normal life. After her husband divorces her, Sun Liying is left to support herself and her son, Zheng Da. Adamant that her son is like all the other children his age, Sun Liying courageously works to teach her son to speak, with the hope that he will be accepted into a mainstream school and receive a descent education.

When her employer offers her a much-needed promotion, Sun Liying realizes that she will not have sufficient time to focus on her son, and she leaves the company and accepts a host of menial part-time jobs. Through working diligently with her son, she finally accepts that he is different and begins to focus on helping him reach his own potential.
