NATIONAL CHIAO TUNG
UNIVERSITY (NCTU),
TAIWAN R.O.C.
National
Chiao Tung University was founded in 1896 under the name of Nanyang College
as part of the effort to meet the urgent need to introduce western civilization
to China. The University grew to include four campuses, located in Shanghai,
Tang-shan, Peiping, and Wuson. The University's mission was to lead China
into the era of modern technology, especially in the fields of transportation
and telecommunications. During the Sino-Japanese war, the University temporarily
relocated to various places within central China, later returning to its
original campuses after the war. The University was dissolved in 1949,
when the communists occupied the Chinese mainland. In 1957, it was re-established
in Hsinchu, about eighty kilometers southwest of Taipei, Taiwan. Hsinchu
is linked to Taipei and Taichung by rail and by several highways, including
a freeway, and the Chiang Kai-Shek International Airport is about forty
minutes away by car. With its concentration of universities, research organizations,
and high-technology firms, Hsinchu is recognized as the technology center
of the Republic of China.
The NCTU
site consists of two campuses, Kuang-Fu and Po-Ai, which together cover
a total area of about 190 acres, and Kuang-Fu is the main campus. The University
has five colleges: College of Sciences, College of Engineering, College
of Management, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and
the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; fifteen undergraduate departments
and twenty-three graduate institutes. The University also engages in many
exchange programs, involving both research and teaching, with other universities
and organizations locally and abroad.
