GREATER KAOHSIUNG METROPOLITAN
DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION
(KMDF), TAIWAN

Kaohsiung is situated on the southwest coast of Taiwan and occupies a strategic location in the Asia Pacific region and astride the main route to the Indian Ocean. She possesses one of the world's largest container ports and is the country's largest industrial center. Moreover, as Taiwan's second largest city with a population of 1.44 million, Kaohsiung has developed rapidly in recent years and already exhibits attributes of an international metropolis.
Although Kaohsiung is an industrial city, much importance is attached to promoting the culture and arts. There are over 1,000 concert, dance performances, plays and fine arts and literary activities held each year. Kaohsiung's convenient transportation and pleasant climate help boost tourism. The city has been actively developing this low-cost, non-polluting and lucrative service industry. Together with the recreational functions of the city's many department stores and international hotels, this has attracted many tourist from within and without the country.  Kaohsiung plans to become the southern center of the tourist resorts.
In the past several years, the city has seen a tangible transformation in construction to result a completely new appearance.  The burgeoning skyscrapers, department stores, 5-star hotels and foreign banks have boosted Kaohsiung a multifaceted and energetic urban character.  The government has been working on projects like the Mass Rapid Transit System, the Multi-Functional Commercial Park, and the Offshore Transshipping Center in furthering the development of the Asia Pacific Regional Operations Center.  This is evidence of Kaohsiung's determination to take its place on the international stage.
