BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL, AUSTRALIA
With its rich history,
diversity of people, sub-tropical climate and the timber and tin of Queenslander
houses, Brisbane (the capital of Queensland) is known as Australia's "most
livable city”. The City of Brisbane is Australia's largest municipality
with more than 802,000 residents, and the Brisbane City Council is Australia's
largest local government.
The Brisbane City Council
encourages the use of ecologically sustainable alternatives and is involved
in a wide range of projects which protect and enhance the environment.
For instance, the Council aims to reduce the number of trips people take
by car and encourages the use of public transport, bicycles and walking
as alternative modes of transport.
The Council also focuses
on providing a broad range of opportunities for residents and visitors
to participate in community life. The Council's exciting new community
input program, Your City, Your Say, is a huge success. Your City, Your
Say gives people a real say in the future - not just by looking at the
big picture but by keeping people informed about things going on in their
neighborhood as well.
The Council has recently
initiated a program which will celebrate the new millennium in the year
2000 and the Centenary of Federation in 2001, the Millennium Program. The
program also aims to promote a better understanding of Brisbane, it's history,
heritage and past achievements. As well as celebrating the city's past,
the program will position Brisbane as a city of the future.
