Initial Call for Papers

The North American Editorial Board of the journal Urban History (Cambridge University Press), invites paper proposals on the theme of ’ÄúTransnational Urbanism in the Americas,’Äù for a round-table at the 9th International Conference of the European Association for Urban History in Lyon, France in August 2008.¬Ý Papers selected for this session by the North American Editorial Board will also be considered for a special issue of Urban History on the same theme.¬Ý Transnational history, which explores historical developments, relations, and interactions that cross nation-state and continental boundaries, has become an exciting new approach throughout the discipline of history. Cities predate nations and in many respects have always been transnational, presenting the opportunity to push the approach of transnational history farther than it has gone, by asking how the urban dimension has structured, promoted, or facilitated transnational interactions?¬Ý Any major thematic approach within this broad rubric of ’Äútransnational’Äù is encouraged: studies of architecture, the arts, urban planning and renewal, municipal politics, migrations, trade, labor markets, explorations, empires and colonies, social and ideological movements, to name only a few possibilities.¬Ý We also encourage submissions from all time periods, and considerations of global relations with all continents.¬Ý The only requirement is that authors include cities of the Americas (South, Central, and/or North), in their transnational or global relations (across national boundaries within the Americas or across national and continental boundaries with the rest of the globe).¬Ý

The special session at the Lyon conference, 27-30 August 2008 will be conducted on the basis of pre-circulated papers.¬Ý Our goal is to collectively critique and refine the papers over a multi-step process that will ultimately result in a unified and path-breaking special issue of Urban History.¬Ý The first step is to submit paper proposals or entire papers, by November 1 2007.¬Ý Please submit your proposal through the internet page of the conference.¬Ý Authors will be notified by the end of November, and complete papers will be due by 30 April 2008.¬Ý Further details of the schedule leading up to the publication of the special issue of Urban History in 2009 will be sent to all who propose papers.¬Ý Up to ten papers will be accepted for the Lyon conference.¬Ý¬Ý (The conference website is http://eauh.ish-lyon.cnrs.fr/).¬Ý

For questions or further information, please contact any member of the North American Board, listed below.¬Ý Please send proposals (in English or French) directly to either of the co-Chairs of the Lyon session, Philip Ethington, philipje (at) usc.edu, History Department, 268 SOS Bldg, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0034.¬Ý Voice 310-488-8168 fax 213-740-6999, or Michˆ®le Dagenais, michele.dagenais (at) umontreal.ca.
