BIOGRAPHIES

elaine chew is an Assistant Professor in Industrial and Systems Engineering at USC, and a senior investigator at the IMSC. She has completed the LTCL and FTCL diplomas in Piano Performance, a BAS in Music and Mathematical and Computational Sciences at Stanford University, and SM and PhD degrees in Operations Research at MIT. She was the recipient of an Office of Naval Research Graduate Fellowship (for Operations Research studies at MIT), a Josephine de Karman Dissertation Fellowship (for her thesis on a mathematical model for tonality), an MIT Science and Technology Grant (for a field study on contemporary Chinese piano music in Beijing) and the MIT Jerome and Laya Weisner Award (for her contribution to the arts at MIT). At MIT, she was an Affiliated Artist of Music and Theater Arts, founder of the Aurelius Ensemble, and performed widely as recitalist and chamber musician. Her musical interests center around making unusual connections and crossing traditional boundaries. Her current research focusses on mathematical and computer modeling of music cognition in order to understanding decision-making in music performance. She is setting up an Electro-Acoustic Cognition Lab at IMSC.

chris kyriakakis is one of the key investigators in the Integrated Media Systems Center at USC. Chris received his BS from Caltech in 1985 and his PhD from USC in 1993. He is the Director of the IMSC Immersive Audio Laboratory where he is investigating methods for realistic audio acquisition and rendering, multichannel sound, and the use of music and spatial audio to augment human-computer interactions. Dr. Kyriakakis and his research have been featured in TIME Magazine, British Broadcasting Corporation, CNN's Future Watch, Discovery Channel, Public Radio International, and TechTV. Dr. Kyriakakis is a member of the IEEE, the Acoustical Society of America, and the Audio Engineering Society. He is a member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Multimedia. He has served as a member of the AES task force for the evaluation of proposed standards for the audio-only version of the Digital Video Disc (DVD), as well as the International Alliance for Multichannel Music (IAMM) for the advancement of multichannel audio recording and reproduction.

dennis thurmond is Director of Electro-Acoustic Media and Associate Professor of Keyboard Studies at the Thornton School of Music. He was formerly the chairman of the music synthesis department and keyboard program at the Berklee College of Music and Teaching Fellow at MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies. He is currently on the summer faculty at the Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands. Mr. Thurmond is a classical and jazz pianist and keyboard synthesist. He is also an elected member of the Acoustical Society of America. His keyboard performance and technical background has included playing synthesizer for the Boston Pops, keyboards for the New York Vocal Jazz Ensemble, being production arranger for the Gospel Review for Symphony Orchestra with Della Reese and Billy Preston, studio pianist for the television series Party of Five and ROM card designer for Kawai Japan. He is a composer and technical consultant for the Music Thru MIDI series and co-composer of the Jazz SophistiCat Series for Alfred Publishing Co. He is a student of Stewart Gordon and Adele Marcus. He has toured Asia, Europe and the US.


kevin dooley is currently a senior at USC pursuing majors in Jazz Studies (drumset) and Electro-Acoustic Media, and a minor in Psychology. At USC, he is a Presidential Scholar, made the Dean's List all semesters, and he has been awarded numerous scholarships, including the National Merit Scholarship, the President's Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement and the Brian LaForce Memorial Scholarship. He is also a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Lambda Delta. He is a founding member of the rock group Telepathy, and has been a squad leader in the USC Trojan Marching Band. In addition, he frequents L.A. area orchestras and ensembles as a freelance percussionist. He has won the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, the United States Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence, the Jim Boggio Jazz Award from the Orange County Musicians' Association and the Idyllwild Arts Toor Scholarship. Mr. Dooley is also the founder and president of USC's Libertarian Club and has teaching experience as tutor/mentor in the Joint Educational Project and for the Princeton Review. Upon graduation, Dooley plans to continue performing, writing, and teaching music while achieving rock stardom with his amazing band Telepathy -- www.telepathymusic.com.

ben levine is a composer, songwriter, and electric bassist. Currently, serving on the faculty of the Flora L. Thornton School of Music at USC, Ben has been composing and performing since 1984. He has performed, and recorded professionally in California, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Maryland, Vermont, New York, and the People1s Republic of China. The list of people and groups he has performed and/or recorded with includes: Lisa Loeb, Brad Hargreaves (3rd Eye Blind), Bennie Maupin (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock), Brian Bromberg, Rick Latham, Alan Pasqua, Carmen Bradford, Brougham, and Living Earth. Ben has worked with many well-respected producers such as Scot Mathewes, Jason Slater, and Mark Binder. Ben has extensive performance experience both as a sideman and as a bandleader. Stylistically, Ben has covered the musical map from Bluegrass to Be-Bop, from Heavy Metal to Hip-Hop, from Classic Rock to Classical Music. This spring, Ben will receive a Master1s of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California where as a student he was awarded the Lionel Hampton Endowed Scholarship.


jim donahue is a senior recording engineer at WGBH in Boston Massachusetts. His current projects include the Boston Symphony, The Handel and Haydn Society, and The Boston Lyric Opera, He has recorded everything from Aerosmith to Zemlinsky and collaborates with the IMSC Immersive Audio Lab on projects that push the limits of multichannel audio.

tomlinson holman is Professor of Film Sound at the USC School of Cinema-Television and a key investigator in the IMSC Immersive Audio Laboratory. He is an honorary member of the Cinema Audio Society and the Motion Picture Sound Editors. He is a fellow of the Audio Engineering Society, the British Kinematograph Sound and Television Society, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He has lifetime or career achievement awards from the CAS and the Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association. Tom was chief engineer at Advent Corporation, founded Apt Corporation, and was the Technical Director at Lucasfilm where he developed the THX Sound System.
