Foreign Language Requirements

For both, Applied Mathematics and Mathematics, Ph.D., students have to pass an exam in one language. The standard is "reading comprehension of mathematics". You must pass the foreign language exam(s) before your defense.

The following is the list of languages which can be used to fulfill your foreign language requirement:

Chinese
French
German
Japanese
Russian

The exam typically consists of translating two pages from a mathematics textbook, graduate level, in a chosen language. The book is chosen by the examiner but students' suggestions are welcome and will be taken into account (I guess a book will be ok unless there is too little text or it is too thin).
