Project Intent Jamie Bernal
The primary objective of this project was to elevate the learning elements of the program. Raising a portion of the program allowed the classrooms to escape the noise of busy Vermont Street as well as devote the majority of the second floor exclusively to the students and their teachers. Elevating this large portion of program also permitted the ground level to maximize the amount of landscape and garden area on the street and public level.
Co-Use Program
An Arts & Literature Appreciation Center (ALAC) is organized on the same principles of the school, as it is an extention and result of the space created by the school. The primary circulation, which runs parallel to Vermont, is continued through the ALAC. The public gardens separate and connect the two diverse components on the ground floor, while the children's library also separates and joins the components on the second floor. The existing Jim Dandy's Fried Chicken eatery occupies its original footprint and has been incorporated into the public realm of the project by altering its relationship with its new surroundings.
