Project Intent Erika Stubstad
Los Angeles Unified School District, invested in the future of education, has selected 85 sites to build new schools. The sites are located in neighborhoods zoned for commercial or retail functions. Their street edges are appropriate for public activities, however schools for young children are often times insular for safety and security reasons. This studio is based on the development of a variety of programs sharing the same site in order to activate a neighborhood. This would also encourage the use of the site for a greater number of hours per day and overlap uses of portions of the building, thereby reducing construction and operating costs. The initial program consists of an elementary school program provided by LAUSD. Specific additional functions are added that will serve the individual nature of the nighborhood residents.
Co-Use Program
A large community center with a shared auditorium and a corner cafe are located in a manner most advantageous to the neighborhood.
