Tsunami

News Report: “A group of Australian surfers were forced to climb trees to escape a tsunami triggered by an earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.”

Model

Numerical modelling of the tsunami was performed with the MOST code (Titov and Gonzalez, 1997).

Fault Parameters: L = 100 km, W = 50 km, dip = 12 deg, strike = 326, rake = 90, slip 3 m, top of fault plane = 10 km

The bathymetry grid is constructed from digitized nautical charts of the region.  Innermost grid resolution is 0.00180 degrees, or approximately  200 m.

Timeseries

Time series of water level were extracted from three points in the simulation.  A time series of current speeds from Macaronis was also extracted.
