1. Draw a "sociogram," a diagram that shows who talks to whom at least once per week. To create the sociogram, array the names spatially, drawing a line between each pair of people who talk to each other at least once per week. To give you a start, here are the links for Eduardo:
2. Based on your sociogram, try to identify which persons,
if any, probably function within this organization as:
But this sociogram does not really explain the centrality of each person in the network. To assess centrality, you can follow a simple mathematical procedure.
4. First, identify the two-step links that connect
one individual to another. There is a
two-step link between two persons if you can get to the person through
the network by
going through another person. For example, there is one two-step
link connecting
Tyrone to Paul through Leland. Enter the number of two-steps
links connecting
each individual to each other individual into the matrix. For any
pair in this network,
there will be zero, one, two or three of these two-step links.
Note that the matrix
is symmetrical.

5. You have also been given the following organization chart.
Who has the "most important contacts? (Hint: superimpose your network
links onto the organization chart.)
Finally, you note the office floor plan. The office has modular, adjustable
walls.
6. What relationship, if any, do you see between the way people are located phsycially and the structure of their communication network?
7. Now that you have analyzed some facets of
this group's communication patterns, what recommendations would you make
to improve communication within this organization? Is there
anything else that you would like to find out?
