Abstract:
In exchange for agreeing to new rules covering services and the
protection of intellectual property, and to remove impediments
to foreign investors, developing countries were supposed to receive
increased market access in previously excluded sectors-agricultural
products, textiles, and clothing. [...] controversy erupted over
the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property
Rights (TRIPS), which, among other provisions, required developing
countries to provide patent protection for pharmaceuticals.
