Tze-Koong (TK) WANG
TK Wang took up violin at the age of 9 at the 32nd Street School in Los Angeles, when a student teacher from the University of Southern California (USC) Thornton School of Music was recruiting after school students. TK then studied with Davol Sanders from Czechoslovakia, Glenn Swan (teaching at the USC Preparatory Division - now Colburn School), and finally attended the USC Thornton School of Music and studied with Eudice Shapiro. He earned both Bachelor's of Music and Master's of Music degrees during this time. In 1963, TK Wang joined the first violin section of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. He continued in the orchestra for 41 years. He and some of his colleagues formed a chamber music ensemble to perform 20th Century works such as Hindemith's Kammermusic. The Botzeley Trio, Pacific String Quartet and Phil String Quartet rounded out TK's musical experiences during this time. He played in the KPFK series of monthly broadcasts of piano trios. Each program consisted of a different Haydn trio and one other trio. During orchestra vacations TK played sonatas with a youth ballet performance program. He also gave numerous sonata recitals. TK played his last concert with the LA Phil on September 18, 2004, after having performed at the inauguration of three venues (the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the new Hollywood Bowl shell), gone on 51 tours, and played 4000 performances. Since retiring from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, TK has refocused his musical interest on sonatas and chamber works, and those flashy solo violin pieces that have no place in orchestra section playing.
