St. Barnabas
Senior Services has served the elderly age 60 and older in downtown
Los Angeles by providing professional social work services, nutrition,
transportation, and adult day care for the past 30 years.
The mission
of St. Barnabas is to enable seniors to live independently and with
dignity for as long as possible.
The Cyber Café
is a specially designed café with computers as a part of the socialization
and recreation programs at the St. Barnabas Center. In the Cyber
Café seniors are encouraged to socialize and interact with their
college student mentors and their peers as well as with the computers.
The mission
of the Cyber Café is not only to provide seniors with a healthy
lifestyle by offering a socialization program, but also to facilitate
the seniors' crossing "the digital divide" by helping
them acquire basic computer skills, to include the ability to access
the Internet, and use an email account.
Currently, there
are over 170 seniors who are enrolled in the Cyber Café
and enjoy using new technologies.
