The Doris Westcott "Helen of Troy"
Scholarship

- Through the generous donations of Mrs. Doris T. Westcott, The
University of Southern California's first "Helen of Troy", the
prestigious HELEN OF TROY SCHOLARSHIP for Latina paraeducators
pursuing teaching as a career was established in 1993. The
recipients of the HELEN OF TROY SCHOLARSHIPS are Latina
bilingual paraeducator/university students who work daily in
classrooms of local schools while pursuing their academic degree
and teaching credentials at the University of Southern California.
The award recipients have demonstrated the highest qualities in
both their academic pursuits, professional development and
humanitarian qualities that will enable them to successfully
complete a teacher education program and become successful
teachers.
- The criteria listed below are key criteria considered in the
selection of the Helen of Troy Scholarship award. The award
committee seeks indicators of scholarship, teaching excellence and
community contributions as evidenced by:
Especially high intellectual standards in terms of academic
achievement, faculty, staff and peer observations and other
indicators of scholarship.
Depth of concern and respect for the field of teaching and
lifelong learning.
Evidence of scholarly, pedagogic, and professional growth as
new knowledge is discovered and realized through classroom
experimentation and professional collaboration.
Extremely effective teaching strategies, including (but not
limited to) innovative uses of various pedagogic strategies to
enhance student learning and student joy of learning.
Measures of involvement with an impact on students'
intellectual, social and personal development, including
recognition and use of students primary language and culture.
Other extraordinary, unique, or pioneering contributions to
excellence in teaching and learning.
