- Mostly Computing
- Applications of AI techniques to helioseismology: genetic and neural-network type algorithms. Especially would they make better minimizers for fitting routines. What about better `standard' methods?
- What can we learn or teach in terms of algorithms and interpretation from similar work done in medical imaging and ocean seismo-acoustics?
- Change data acquisition code at MWO to create .fits images and tape using tar.
- Automatic and pipelined data reduction and analysis.
- Port the image restoration techniques to USC and modify them for use with MWO image. (produces MTF info too).
- Methods to combine time-series from different instruments.
- Test images and testing rotational correlation, and better r-corr methods (effects of resampling etc.).
- Better ways to make sub-pixel image registration.
- Investigate the use of wavelet transforms, especially their use in Local Helioseismology (T-D).
- Mostly Physics and Applied Theory
- Maps of `local' velocity-intensity phase-shifts, and what can they tell us about the solar atmosphere.
- Model of flow propagation in a p-mode wave field to generate blind data to test local analysis.
- Calculation of formation heights for lines and continua in the solar atmosphere and the interaction with p-modes: what are we really observing? Can observational data provide more precise input than theory: ie. can we learn more about the physics?
- Why doesn't geometric mapping get rid of `distortion' in tracked ring diagrams? Is it change in effective depth?
- local helioseismology: what does it tell us, and what are its limitations.
- Magnetogram calibration !
