Introduction:

Filter Diagonalization (FD) is a non linear spectral estimator method developed at USC. This method has proved to provide higher spectral resolution (in a limited spectral range) than traditional Fourier  transform (FT) techniques.

Technical summary:

We propose to use LOI data as a step in proving the FD and FD-FT hybrid  methods for use in helioseismology. The LOI data is an ideal `next step' after our initial tests on artificial data showed promise. The LOI data provides a very high quality, low noise, uninterrupted data set which requires very little pre processing before spectral estimation.

This work is intended as a pilot study to provide evidence of the usefulness of the technique before applying for grants to make a more detailed study of the use of FD methods in helioseismology.
