PhD dissertation: Architecture-independent Programming and Synthesis of Networked Sensing Applications: Rapid technological advancements are accelerating the vision of pervasive embedded computing. The next generation of context-aware applications requires programming models and abstractions radically different from traditional distributed computing. In my thesis research, I am defining a methodology for architecture-independent programming and automatic software synthesis for spatial computing on sensor networks. The objective is to enable domain experts to design and deploy non-trivial networked sensing applications without requiring knowledge of low level networking aspects of the deployment. The basis of the methodology is a data driven programming model called the Abstract Task Graph (ATaG). ATaG programs are concise, understandable, and network-independent descriptions of global application behavior. The ATaG compiler analyzes the program in the context of a separately specified network description and automatically generates deployable code for each node in the target network. A prototype programming and software synthesis environment based on ATaG is being designed and implemented.
